Timber Framing
Wood is an exceptional material because it carries its history with it. Even in a refined form, it retains its biological attributes—carbon harvested from the atmosphere and arranged to provide shelter. The presence of large timbers offers a comforting sense of scale, bringing the quiet energy of the forest understory indoors.
Where modern construction often relies on hiding its materials, timber framing highlights them. There is an honest utility in exposing the structural elements of a building. It serves as a direct connection to a legacy of clever joinery and simple tools used to make robust, enduring spaces.
My focus is on small, custom timber frame structures that balance this heritage with everyday function. These frames excel as unconditioned outbuildings—barns, workshops, sheds, and studios—or as thoughtful additions to existing structures.
I offer design services, hand-cut joinery, and frame raising.
Grindbygg:
a Norwegian style of timber framing defined by it’s necked tying joint. These beautiful structures can accommodate a wide range of materials including natural occurring shapes giving many of these structures a living quality.
